A thick and creamy cream cheese frosting makes it even more irresistible.

I love the small size of this air fryer chocolate cake. One cake makes about 2 to 3 servings.

What Size Pan To Use?

You will want to use a 6 to 7-inch pan for this recipe. Depending on the height of your pan, you can either make 3 thin cakes or 2 thicker cakes. The thicker ones will need to cook longer.

Air Fryer Cooking Times Vary

Different air fryers cook at different rates so use the cooking time as an estimate. A thick cake will need to cook at 360 for 10 minutes and then at 350 for 15 to 20 minutes. A thin cake should be done after cooking at 360 for 10 minutes.

I have baked this cake in both my Cosori 5.8-Quart Air Fryer and my Instant Vortex Plus Air Fryer with great success.

Air Fryer Chocolate Cake Recipe Tip

Be sure to spray the cake pan with cooking spray or Baking Spray with Flour to make sure the cake doesn’t stick.

Can I Use A Different Size Cake Pan?

Yes, you just need to be sure it fits in your air fryer basket. Any cake pan that can be used in an oven can be used in an air fryer.

If you use a different size pan, the air frying time will be different.

How To Store

Since the frosting has cream cheese in it, store in the refrigerator.

Equipment

  • 6 to 7-inch pan
  • Baking spray with flour

Materials

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • ¼ cup mini chocolate chips

Frosting

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • sprinkles

Instructions

  • Whisk together first 6 ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Add egg, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla and use a hand-held mixer to beat together for 1 minute.
  • Stir in boiling water. Once mixed in, stir in mini chocoloate chips.
  • If you want a thicker cake, use a tall pan.
Spray the cake pan really well with baking spray with flour.
  • For thicker cake, fill pan about halfway up the sides with batter. Air fry at 360 degrees for 10 minutes and then at 320 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes.
For thinner cake, fill pan about 2/3 full and air fry at 360 for 10 minutes. Cake will most likely be done at this point but if not, continue to air fry at 320 degrees for a few minutes.
  • Let cool in pan for 5 minutes and then remove from pans.
Make a second cake or use excess batter to make cupcakes.
  • To make frosting, beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla in a medium bowl until smooth.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and cocoa powder until no lumps remain.
Beat into cream cheese mixture in 2 additions along with the tablespoon of milk.
If too thick, you can add a little more milk.
  • Spread frosting on cake once cool. Add sprinkles.

Notes

You will have plenty of cake batter for 3 thin cakes or 2 thicker cakes.
Both pans that I used are from this air fryer accessory kit.
Cake should be stored in the refrigerator since the frosting contains cream cheese.
