Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks

Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks air fry up wonderfully crispy with just a minimal amount of oil. So much easier than baking or deep-frying.

Crispy Coating

The mozzarella sticks get double coated for an extra crispy exterior. I like to use a mixture of Panko crumbs and Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs for the coating. The Panko crumbs are extra crisp and the breadcrumbs help evenly coat the mozzarella sticks.

Place flour in 1 bowl, eggs and milk in second bowl, and Panko/breadcrumb mixture in third.

How To Make Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks

(More detailed instructions in recipe card below.)

  • Prepare the mozzarella. Cut each stick in half into 2 shorter pieces.
  • Prepare the coating. You will need 3 bowls. Place flour in one bowl, eggs and milk in a second bowl, and Panko crumb/breadcrumb mixture in a third.
  • Coat the mozzarella sticks. Roll each mozzarella stick in flour and dip in egg mixture and then coat in breadcrumbs. Dip a second time in egg mixture and then one more time in breadcrumbs.
  • Freeze. Freeze for at least 2 hours.
  • Preheat air fryer and air fry. Preheat the air fryer to 390 degrees. Spray basket with oil. Add half the mozzarella sticks. Spray them with oil. Air fry 5 minutes, then shake the basket and air fry another minute or two. Repeat with remaining mozzarella sticks.

How To Serve

Serve mozzarella sticks immediately after making. I like to serve them with marinara sauce or pizza sauce, but they are also great with ranch dressing.

Recipe Tips

  • Spray the mozzarella sticks with a little oil. This will help them get really golden and crispy.
  • Do not crowd the air fryer basket. Cook in batches if necessary. There needs to be plenty of room for the air to circulate.
  • Check frequently. Air fryers cook at different rates. As soon as you start seeing cheese oozing out, it’s time to remove them from the air fryer.

Storage

Best eaten right away but will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 days and can be reheated at 350 degrees in an air fryer.
